Outsiders often see the truth about a culture that the denizen cannot.

Sociologists refer to a process called a “common sense inventory”.

Basically the newcomer has to ask questions because they don’t know the rules of the culture, those historical set of assumptions that have been transmitted from childhood.

Alex Thomson is an alien who landed on Planet Fitba earlier this year.

His lack of comprehension of how things are in Glasgow has been highly instructive.

One of the things that Alex has been introduced to is the extent to which the “RFC underclass”, as he styled them on twitter, are allowed to bully and intimidate anyone who irks them.

The only remarkable thing about his blog yesterday on the Channel 4 News site was that it has taken this long for someone in the UK media to  stumble upon Planet Fitba’s dirty little secret.

Alex felt no need to genuflect to the “Old Firm” fiction that there was some Rorschachian symmetry in the crime count between the two soccer tribes in Glasgow.

He simply outlined the facts and it is impossible to tell this story within the “one side is as bad as the other” framework so the Glasgow media ignore it.

As anyone in the public agencies in Glasgow will tell you privately it is the blue half of the city that is overwhelmingly the source of the city’s anti-social football problems.

Their Herrenvolk swagger imbues them with a sense of entitlement that they can behave with impunity.

They are hardly deluded in this matter as heretofore they have largely escaped any sanction from the state.

A klan apologist could argue that this is small scale stuff and people should man up.

However, broken windows can eventually lead to broken lives.

When I reported the threats against me in 2010 to An Garda Síochána were highly professional and that is because they know what the outcome can be when scum start threatening a journalist.

Subsequently, they have a Zero Tolerance approach to such “banter”.

My NUJ colleagues in Northern Ireland have met with a similar professional response from the PSNI.

These two police jurisdictions have reasons to take such things seriously, Veronica and Marty, lest we forget.

When little crimes are ignored they are, in effect, tolerated.

The perpetrator can then become the serious criminal of tomorrow.

What is needed is for everyone who is threatened by the Ibrox klan to report it to the police immediately and demand the protection of the law.

This fascist underclass needs to have manners put on them, that is why there are  police and courts funded by the taxpayer.

I suspect that is what any outsider would expect a mature democracy to do with such people.

PaulMc – The sinister element supporting the ran6ers ARE in the majority, so let’s not kid ourselves. The fact that they are sinister proves that. If they were in the minority they would be less brave (i.e., more cowardly) than they are at present.

    • PaulMc

Ok Frankier. I don’t know how many “fans” of oldco or The Rangers are among that sinister element. I just know that I find people like that to be morally repugnant.

I also fully believe that the vast majority of hate crimes in Scotland perpetrated from one group to another are from “supporters” of The Rangers upon people of Irish Catholic descent. There were stats to support this but the latest government apparently “lost” them.

      Happy now?

  • Cooper54

Thanks JimtheTim …but thats not my perception of Glasgow , thats the stereotyped outlook from people like Hen McGinley ! As most of my family are Catholic Celtic fans i dont enjoy real bigotry one little bit …and i honestly cannot see any end to it all as both sides just love to hate each other .

    • Ben mcginlay

Hen McGinlay, good one Cooperman, see what you did there. Changed the first letter of my Christian name. If thats your patter. Lol ( not )

  • lordmac

at present, any children can attend a catholic school of any faith, so what is the problem, they can all join if there is room for them.

  • Stu

Could someone clear up a little question for me?

I was under the impression that the reason the unprecedented decision to allow the transfer of Rangers’ membership ‘share’ to The Rangers was to get them around the ’3 years audited accounts’ rule, and allowing them to say that although they as an entity didn’t have 3 years worth of accounts, the ‘share’ did.

With that in mind, did the audited accounts for season 11-12 ever actually show up? Because, I’m guessing without them, there would be no membership ‘share’ to actually transfer?

    • Proud Scot

      Stu
that is a very good point.
I reckon if you look under the SFA rug you’ll find the answer there…..along with everything else they brush under it.

  • jomac

    Cooper54.

I appreciate you posting on here but if you realy want to experiance bigotry to its full.
hop in to rm,ff or the rangers vanguard and read.

  • the sad aspect of the whole bigotry situation with sevco and their like is very simple to spot ,it’s a mood and an atmosphere of bias, bigotry, sectarianism,DENIAL and of course a deep, deep, hatred of ALL things REPUBLICAN IRISH,CATHOLIC AND CELTIC FC,maybe not in that order, but it certainly includes them, alas and hopefully the day will come when it dawns on even the ZOMBIES of sevco that this attitude has to change hopefully, ta ta and god bless neil lennon and celtic fc the only decent things about scottish football, p.s widnae cross the street tae watch sevco, widnae pay intae celtic park, cos lawwell and desmond should be saying a lot more than they are saying at this particular time, nuff said

Those of the Rang*rs persuasions idea of investigative journalism is to find out what school you went to.

That’s all they need to know regardless of any facts that may be presented.

Then you have the likes of the mad blogger who appeals to the lunatic fringe on the likes of The Bears Den or Vanguard Bears. To be fair some of his own supporters even realise the guy is nothing but a rambling bigot who dilutes the truth to moblise the nutters.

If you even read the history of his blogs he regularly named The Late Paul McBride, Trish Godman and anything else anti-celtic could find? He claimed Alex Thomson deliberately insulted the dead of the Ibrox disaster and that the gunman in the zombie banner was an IRA gunman.

    Threatening communication act anyone?

Surely, constantly stirring up hatred with lies should fall into this category?

No wonder nobody will employ him!

  • Cooper54

PaulMc…..does the entire Rangers support make threats to journalists ? Im just going along with the sweeping statements that are the norm on here …..when in Rome and all that . The assault on me was perpetrated by lowlife cowards of which there are many on both sides . If you where to believe all the stuff thats peddled nowadays about how great the Celtic support is and how bigoted the Rangers support is you could ask yourself what is it about a wee City like Glasgow managed to be home to the Greatest fans in the world at Celtic ….and the most bigoted , riotous sectarian , nazi saluting monkey hun knuckledraggers ever to be shat upon creation ? Thats some going for one wee city …or is it really just bollocks ? lol

    • PaulMc

My reply was making the point that it’s not all fans. I was being humorous, albeit in a rather facetious way.

I do believe that there is a rather sinister element supporting The Rangers. They are not the majority, but they are a very vocal and dangerous bunch because no one has really stood up to them yet. Because their actions very often go unchallenged many of them seem to think that they can act with impunity.

    • Ben mcginlay

Copperman spouting the same old shit. ‘It’s just as bad on both sides’. Typical Sevco retort, what about them…..The evidence is there, open your eyes. I will accept that there is individuals in every team in the world that do not conduct themselves in a proper manner and are prone to violent behaviour. But there is a sizeable portion of the Klan who act in a provocative and aggressive way. Manchester, Barcelona etc etc etc

    • jimthetim

Cooper, I dont think we’re ever going to agree on many issues, but I think you got Glasgow bang on there. A round of applause for Copper everyone…………..

  • tamtic

Never having attended a protestant school i can’t comment on their teaching methods, but i do know some lovely children who go to a protestant school and I think its significant that their parents are lovely people, fair minded and tolerant. It’s surely the parents who must take responsibility how their children develop in later life. I can however say in all honesty we were never taught bigotry in the Catholic school I attended, quite the opposite in fact. No we must never lose our Catholic schools, our parents and grandparents actually built some of these schools by raising the money themselves, like my Alma Mater, St Roch’s Primary in Garngad

  • Bill

    Absorbing article and posts.
I have attended hundreds of home Celtic matches in the old stadium; many involving Rangers and several away matches at Ibrox. On one memorable occasion the only away seats available for a match at Ibrox were in the Rangers end of the main stand. Not to be recommended.

Over the years I witnessed some unpleasant behaviour from a tanked up minority of Celtic fans. On one occasion I was shocked and saddened to see a gang attack a visiting Dundee United fan. This was miles from the ground. But, the vast majority of Celtic fans in my experience have been able to enjoy matches including defeats, in good grace. There are some bad apples; these are few and far between. But we do have them.

Rangers/Sevco fans do not travel well. There are some decent followers who are interested in football and enjoy a bit of banter in good humour. However, there is or appears to be a large contingent who are not interested in football and are only there to engage in violence and rioting. This seems to have become worse as time has passed. Some websites from so called fans reveal an unwelcoming and aggressive xenophobia. That these “people” have latched onto Rangers is revealing.I am all for freedom of speech but I do not extend this to giving thugs freedom to spout propaganda and orchestrate violence. It is to be hoped that the “adventure” in the 3rd division will be an opportunity for Sevco to mend some fences, shed some baggage and learn some humility.

    • Ben mcginlay

The “Adventure” in the 3rd Division as you put it so far has dispelled any thought of a new era from Sevco/Newco fans. Seems to be same old same old. Higher than normal arrest rates( that are not highlighted by our old friends of the MSM). The Klan have( I was going to say evolved, but that would be the wrong choice of word) grown to be more fervent and more of ‘no one likes us we don’t care’.And that will worsen as more possible rulings against them will add fuel to their fire. The chants at home and away grounds are ignored too. My reasoning is that the authorities(SFA, SFL and the Police) are wanting to give the poor souls a break as they have been through enough. But that is just me, call me cynical.

  • Cooper54

Its good to see the bigotry in the west coast of Scotland being highlighted.
personally I’ve witnessed it on multiple occasions being a mechanical engineer and can assure you it is still rife.

be it being promotion or just preferential treatment, they still persist to look after their own even to their own detriment.
watching the demise of the huns is so enjoyable as they can’t look me in the eye.hh

On a slightly different thread but still linked to Chuckles Green, he has apologised to Aston Villa for calling them “completely useless” saying “no offence intended”

    WTF? What did he intend?

Or was he just not thinking before he put his mouth in gear?
Not for the first or last time I suspect !!!

    • PaulMc

Aye, Aston Villa, a team that won the European Cup. Who are they?

    • Scotjolly

Hi – I think you miss the point here – This man is a genius, every tabloid and football pundit is talking about him and Rangers*. Why would anyone talk about a Div 3 side from the bogs of Scotland, unless something like this is preached from someone who has a vested interest in getting publicity and attention from all parts of football – This prompts People (Investors) to remember that he is still in the forefront of the football world. This is not the last “little gem” that is going to be uttered by this PR diamond. It also takes away the “football competence angle” as they are pure shoit on the field, so how else can they sell the idea and share issue to the knuckle dragging follow followers. He is not to be underestimated !!! One more small thing – As he spouts his words of wisdom, have you noticed how he always “links” and compares his wee outfit with all the big boys?? It is amazing, he never mentions Annan, East Stirling or Montrose, but thats who he is playing against !!! He talks about the great Manchester United (because of their revenue, that he is very very impressed with) and Aston Villa as rubbish (this was to get the publicity and the “link” — A very shrewd and clever man – I think that even Wee Pieman knows it !!!!!!

  • andy prior

1 i thought you would like phil. purchased your book, downfall, from waterstones and wished to buy m’gurks pub bombing also but was sold out. w.h. smith had 10 at a branch nearby so i walked down there to get it. was told they had 10 but they were in the stock cupboard which miraculously was closed and they had no key! i would have thought a stock cupboard for a major book seller was of the greatest importance, or maybe we don’t have any lock smiths in glasgow now. makes you think!

  • Jim Wood

Brilliant Phil, and how ironic that a stranger from channel 4 should expose The stRangers FC from Ibrox for what they are. How pleasing it is to be a ‘stranger’ in this country witnessing it. How funny it is to see their attempts to re-write their bigotry and finally how long your name will survive in our culture,Phil, for being one of those who “Kept at them.”
Keep at them still Phil, for I suspect there is a long way to go with this story.

  • S.B. BELFAST

As a North of Ireland Catholic I know exactly where you are coming from Phil and you and Alex are two stars who shine in a stinking, rotten world of British/Irish media indifference, ignorance and deliberate misinformation.
So ingrained was anti-Catholic, anti-Nationalist and anti-Irish bigotry in the Unionist North of Ireland state from 1921 that the British government was eventually shamed through international pressure into desolving the bigoted Stormont monolith in the 1970′s eventually introducing equality legislation for Catholics long before the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. It would appear to me, as a North of Ireland Catholic, that similar legislation needs to be introduced to Scotland to force change in the Establishment there and embarrass the sectarian mentality of many of the population.
I often visit Scotland, under two guises, and the difference in the way I am treated is a real eye opener. When I go as a visitor to see relatives, as a North of Ireland person, with no outward allegiance or colours to who or what I am, I am treated with respect by the various Scottish travel agencies, workers and local people around the airports and ports; without colours they don’t know my background as I could be a Rangers fan and Unionist by my accent.
HOWEVER when I go to Scotland and wear ANYTHING that shows me as an Irish citizen (GAA/Irish soccer top) OR as a Celtic fan I can feel the hostility as soon as I step off the plane or boat. Over the years I have experienced dreadful bigotry and sectarianism when I go to Scotland from airport/seaport workers and locals in wee Ayrshire towns and villages AND local police forces who don’t hide their contempt and hatred for ALL things Irish/Catholic/Celtic. The derogatory comments Celtic fans would get from official Scotland on numerous occasions would fill a textbook and caused great anger and resentment at times but what could we do; they really hated us with a passion.
There is no doubt that collectively Scotland has a rabid medieval fundamentalist view of Catholics, Irish and Celtic people and this runs through all facets of life there like lettering through a stick of rock. It has to change and you Phil and Alex Thompson are at the forefront of this. Keep up the good work and never bow the head. HAIL HAIL!

    • Graeme

I cant disagree with that description. But just as Glasgow is often voted one of the friendliest cities in Europe, yet also often statistically the murder capital of the Continent, things are not black and white but a myriad shades of grey.
Glasgow, the west of Scotland and Ayrshire are particularly peculiar.
The fact that behaviors have gone unchallenged for so long both entrenches and emboldens.
It is a great scandal that the authorities are indifferent to this cultural cancer that infects the marrow of the nation.

    • Ben mcginlay

What does that mean so called masonwalker ? Are ordinary people meant to ignore the comments and attitudes of narrow minded morons…if you are going to post it would help if you commented something constructive, but by going with your previous posts I won’t hold my breath…. Oh, LOL

  • Well said, Phil. With regard to your assertion that Rangers supporters believe that they can behave lawlessly in Scotland with impunity, it’s pertinent to remind ourselves of how often they have disgraced themselves abroad yet dared to criticise the local policing. From Bucharest to Barcelona via Manchester, somehow it always seems to be the fault of the bad, non-Scottish police.

  • Scotland’s shame,apologies because it’s very long but well worth a read.

    http://www.redflag.org.uk/frontline/four/04sectar.html

  • Great article Phil and I have just about finished reading ‘Downfall’ – what an eye opener! My pal is waiting on me finishing it so I can give him next read. It will do the rounds for sure.

IMHO there is a culture of sectarianism and bigotry in Scotland that permeates all through Scottish society that is sometimes difficult to pin point but which manifests itself throughout the corridors of power and down throughout society. It is the same culture of shame that allegedly allowed Jimmy Saville to operate for decades within the BBC without anyone taking him to task. Its the shame that dare not speak its name in Scotland and it too has been operating for decades and decades enshrined in a culture of fear and intimidation against anyone daring to speak out against it…’bigotry’. The whole machinery of the state on terms of the newspapers, the television, radio, magazines, the media in general as well as employers and statesmen who have an agenda against multiculturalism in general but more specifically an in bred hatred of all things Irish, all things Catholic and all things Celtic. But time is not on their side and it is my firm belief now that as the decades pass tolerance and a culture of multi ethnicity will engulf the bigots to the extent that they will find it increasingly difficult to get people to agree with them and their foolish narrow minded views. They must be challenged at every level even if that means simply not agreeing with them. . .try it – it works.
Together we can stop the bigots!

I wish Donal Mac Intyre would do a piece on them for Sky tv…..show the world that some people in Scotland are subjected to living in a “Scottish Apartheid”…good piece as per phil ;-)

  • Ian N

Unfortunately, some fall I to the trap of blaming Catholic schooling. Lets remember these are hotbeds of success, not only academically but in terms of producing rounded individuals with a world view. The very dislike of Catholic schools speaks volumes, and betrays the underlying dislike for catholicism and Catholics. Don’t fall into the same trap. By all means don’t attend one, but why does there presence offend? They do not teach hatred or division!

  • Ian N

    Sorry, root not riot.

  • Ian N

I hate to sound defeatist, but I feared we might have been past the point of dealing with this via legal processes. I think the anti-Catholic traits are so ingrained, so ‘natural’, and ultimately so comfortable to many that we need more than legal adherence. Then I thought about other changes in public attitudes that have had a riot in a legal change. Drink driving, child abuse, even smoking are all examples where public opinion has been changed, but only after legislators made a stance. I’m now convinced. Birch them!

  • Ben mcginlay

    Fine article Phil.

Alex Thomson is simply just telling the truth.

Thanks and respect to you and Alex for getting the truth out in the open. Especially as increasingly on a daily basis the truth is often covered up or distorted to muddy the waters or just simply not reported.

Reading over on CQN that there were allegedly 75 arrests before during and after the match in Stirling last Saturday.

If this is indeed true why no reporting of it in the MSM? I think we all know the answer to that one.

As someone who grew up in the West of Scotland and following Celtic for those years it was very clear at times that there was institutional bias not only in the sporting arena but in the jobs area. I have to say however that as an atheist I firmly believe we need to have one school system for everyone.Looking back it was evident there was a difference between Catholics and Protestants. I had to walk past a public school to get to my Catholic school. That is just plain wrong and should be rectified for 21st century people.

    • Ben mcginlay

Some of the best Schools in Glasgow are catholic schools. Academically anyway. There are catholic schools all over England and there isn’t a big thing made of it. I remember being told when I was younger that I wouldn’t learn much as I would always be doing religious education( utter crap ) The parents are the biggest factor in how kids grow up and learn to respect themselves and other people and not to hate someone because of their skin colour or religion or because their dad hates them.. I still don’t believe that the orange order has a place in today’s society..

    • SamBrowneBelt

Those who wish to rid us of Catholic schools seem to ignore the fact that the social/racial/ethnic apartheid practiced against (mainly Irish) Catholics in Scotland was in place long before the 1918 Education Act.
Catholic schools are here BECAUSE of the above; they didn’t cause it.

    • Scotjolly

The Catholic schools are only there because the “establishment” created and caused this separation – THEY didn’t want you !!!

So now we have an education system that they want integrated – I say NEVER NEVER NEVER – As the chap above says, we are taught tolerance and understanding. THEY are taught something else that I don’t think our children should never have to endure or listen to – I hated it and “got out”, thankfully my kids do not hear the words Kaflik or Proddy ever !! Do you think we would get any thanks from the hordes if we allowed them in — No chance – keep them out!!!!

  • Kenny McCaffrey

Excellent Phil, as ever. Nothing will happen until the bile everyone in Scotland knows about and reads in comments on blogs, etc, are given as much air as possible on UK-wide TV – by Channel 4 news, or Panorama, say.

Of course, it may not change the views of a lot of intellectually-challenged bampots, but I’m sure if everyone in the British Isles knew just how much utter garbage is spoken by these orcs, we might – just might – just get some public pressure on the authorities to do something about enforcing some anti-bigotry laws.

At the very least, such people may actually become the social pariahs they should always have always been made in any decent society.

  • James R

Excellent piece Phil. The DR have no doubt disabled their comments section because it dispelled the myth of “one’s as bad as the other”. Celtic fans typically would post with stuff they’d read from Phil’s site, or RTC, or SFM and challenge the drivel being spouted by the MSM. Rangers/Sevco fans typically resorted to the same, tired old abusive crap they always do.

  • Ignoranceisnodefence

And yet, still largely under-told by the media, conveniently sidelined by the Scottish Government vastly ignored by the Scottish justice system………heads in the sand by the Football authorities who, due to this position have left their backsides exposed to ensure another good shafting by the Newco / Oldco.

  • Phil.

When we have politicians and business leaders who endorse and excuse this behaviour what chance do we have.
Having said that change does not come quick and things are much better now than in my fathers day.

  • Ben mcginlay

It really does take an impartial outsider to tell the world what is going on here. If the Klan totally had their way, there would be some form of Apartheid in Scotland. As you said Phil, it all starts with so called banter, attitudes from parents passed onto kids, highlighting wrongdoers in the media if they are Celtic fans(murdering Celtic fan etc). Always mentioning rangers first in any context. Jingoism by the Oldco and probably Newco, blaming Catholic Schools for bigotry and saying one side is as bad as the other to try and make it not look so one sided. The ridiculous excuses from people who should know better when our Neil was being threatened, attacked and had bombs sent to him in the post. ‘He brings it on himself’ ‘he should know when to keep his mouth shut’ ‘He has no class’ (unlike Walter ) ‘it’s his ginger hair’ All totally ridiculous, when the truth being that he is the manager of Glasgow Celtic (crime 1) he is a catholic from Northern Ireland(crime 2 and 3) and probably the biggest crime in the Klans and the MSM’s eyes is he will not listen to any shit thrown at him and take it lying down. He will always stand up for himself and Celtic, To me that is Neil’s biggest asset and that is how I live my life and how I would be in any situation.

  • Once again an excellent piece brother phil, SCOTLAND and it’s legal, and judicial systems falls completely by the wayside when administering or not going after these PEEPEL, thank god for people like you and big AL from C.4. NUF SAID

  • Kevin

    Phil,

Have you heard the Daily Record website has disabled the comments on their football articles?

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/comments-suspended-on-football-articles-1374220

I don’t buy their excuse – I think something big is coming up soon. Possibly the outcome of the tax tribunal AND the liquidation of Rangers FC (1872) is imminent?

    • Scotjolly

Kevin, Spot on. I noticed recently that the Orcs were very quiet on the forum and that they had given up and WALKED AWAY !!. They did this in numbers and the only time they came out recently was when they beat the mighty McCall’s Motherwell !!! They were out in full force, extolling the crap SPL and the saviour of all things Scottish – The Rangers – hahahaha.

You are correct, the big tax case decision is imminent and the BDO people are about to reverse the decision about the asset selling and that is why Greeny bhoy is desperate to get the share issue going, so that there is too much red tape and legal agreements and arguments to reverse. Also, the title stripping will be started within the next couple of weeks, so, in true Scottish fair play, they withdraw the “forum” from the paper and “HOPE” that the Orcs will not smash up central Scotland when the outcome of all 3 hits them – I, for one, can’t wait !!!!
